Fiona Apple is Back And She's Wearing a Squid on Her Head And She's Thinner Than Ever

Whatever happened to this girl? I remember when I first heard her deep, gravelly voice back in 1996, singing a real doozy of a torch song - Shadowboxer - and her pure immersion into femme fatale in the noirish Criminal. She looked stunning, with those wide eyes and long, brown hair. Enormous promise, and wicked songs. Then came the somewhat trippy Fast As You Can, which was all kinds of epic, sweeping, and textured. It recalled some of the work Joni Mitchell did in the early 70s. And then . . . nothing. Nothing at all, she went on her "fuck you" tirade after getting an award, and nothing was heard of her again. Her 2005 album didn't even cast a ripple.

And now she's back. And I'm not sure I like this song - it's not an accessible pop song, it's sort of obtuse, and she's looking as thin as ever. Eh. Maybe it'll make a ripple.

Note: the title of this blog post is a reference to Apple's penchant for very long titles. At least, it's not 90 words long.
